Kristin LeBlanc, CPA

There are two things certain in life, “death and taxes.”  This is the motto Nevada CPA and Society member, Kristin LeBlanc, adopted from her gregarious grandfather.  As a little girl, Kristin remembers visiting her uncle who was a CPA, and asking, “Why are you doing taxes? It seems so boring.”  Her uncle gently explained that CPAs are more than boring tax people; they help people accurately and efficiently run businesses.  Many years later, Kristin found this to be true.

In 2008, Kristin passed the Uniform CPA Examination on her first attempt at the age of 22.  In the same year, she received her Master’s of Science in Accountancy from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Las Vegas CPA firm Johnson Jacobson Wilcox hired Kristin as an intern in September of 2006.  She stayed on full-time as a Staff Accountant after her internship was completed and was later promoted to Senior Staff Accountant in January of 2009.

Kristin suggests that now is the best time to join the profession.  “CPAs serve as the underlying support for most businesses, and because the tax and accounting environments are constantly changing, business owners need our services now more than ever,” Kristin said.  She feels that the changing professional environment is what makes her job so interesting.  “Each day brings a new challenge.”

On top of her busy work schedule, Kristin taught as a part-time accounting instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  From August to December of 2009, Kristin taught an introductory course in accounting (Accounting 201), helping further the interest of accounting for a younger generation.  She has a close perspective to the younger generation, not only because of her youth, but because she was introduced to the interesting aspects of accounting at a young age.

Kristin’s passion for helping people extends far beyond being a CPA.  In conjunction with Johnson Jacobson Wilcox’s community outreach efforts, Kristin loves to participate in Through the Eyes of a Child's Halloween Event.  When asked about the event Kristin told us that, “The event is designed to give the kids at Child Haven an opportunity to spend an afternoon playing games, eating candy, and just simply being a kid.”  She went on to say, “The children at Child Haven struggle every day with family hardships and it’s satisfying to know that I had a tiny part in helping them feel better.”  By participating in this event, she has been able to give back to a program that she feels is close-to-heart because as a child, Kristin also had family hardships.

For those considering a degree or profession in accounting, Kristin was kind enough to give a suggestion for success; she said when preparing to take the CPA exam, she decided that a short period of intense study worked best with learning and retaining the information required to pass the test.

It isn’t all work and no play for Kristin though.  In between work, teaching, and participating with company-sponsored charity events, Kristin leads an active social life in the Las Vegas metro area.  She enjoys bowling, hiking, and running, which she feels is necessary to clear her mind in order to perform better at work.  In fact, in 2008 she ran a 5k for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation.  She commented, “This event was special for me because I have a family member affected by childhood cancer.”
